Introduction to Tempered Glass

Tempered glass, also known as strengthened glass or prestressed glass, is a type of safety glass that forms compressive stress on the surface of glass through physical or chemical methods to enhance its strength. The following is a detailed introduction about tempered glass.

1、 Definition and Characteristics of Tempered Glass

Definition: Tempered glass is obtained by cutting ordinary annealed glass into the required size, heating it to around 700 degrees near the softening point, and then rapidly and uniformly cooling it. During this process, uniform compressive stress is formed on the surface of the glass, while tensile stress is formed internally, significantly improving the bending and impact strength of the glass.

characteristic: High strength: The strength of tempered glass is more than four times that of ordinary annealed glass. For tempered glass of the same thickness, its impact strength and bending strength are 3 to 6 times that of ordinary glass.

Safety: Even if tempered glass is broken, it will shatter into uniform small particles without sharp edges, which is not easy to harm people and greatly improves the safety of use.

Thermal stability: Tempered glass has strong thermal stability and can withstand three times the temperature difference of ordinary glass, with a temperature difference variation of 200 ℃.

2、 Production Process of Tempered Glass

Physical tempering: also known as quenching tempering. Heat ordinary flat glass in a heating furnace to a temperature close to the softening temperature of the glass (about 600 ℃), and eliminate internal stress through its own deformation. Subsequently, the glass is removed from the heating furnace and high-pressure cold air is blown onto both sides of the glass using a multi head nozzle to rapidly and uniformly cool it to room temperature, thereby producing tempered glass.

Chemical tempering: Improving the strength of glass by altering the chemical composition of its surface. Generally, ion exchange method is used for tempering, which involves immersing silicate glass containing alkali metal ions into molten lithium salt to exchange Na+or K+ions on the surface of the glass with Li+ions, forming a Li+ion exchange layer on the surface. Due to the smaller expansion coefficient of Li+compared to Na+and K+ions, the glass is in a stress state where the inner layer is under tension and the outer layer is under compression after cooling.

3、 Classification and Application of Tempered Glass

Category: Divided into flat tempered glass and curved tempered glass  according to shape.

Divided into flat tempered steel and curved tempered steel according to appearance.

According to flatness, it can be divided into superior and qualified products. Among them, superior products are often used for car windshields, while qualified products are mostly used for building decoration.

Application: In the field of architecture, it is widely used in high-rise building doors and windows, glass curtain walls, indoor partition glass, daylighting ceilings, etc.

Furniture field: such as glass tables, glass coffee tables, etc.

Electronic field: Display screens or casings for items such as MP3 players, cameras, clocks, etc.

Transportation industry: such as windshields for airplanes, high-speed trains, ships, cars, etc.
