How is clear float glass made?

The raw materials are melted at high temperature, then the molten glass flows onto a bath of molten tin. Gravity and surface tension spread the glass into a flat ribbon with smooth upper and lower surfaces. The ribbon is cooled, annealed, and cut into flat sheets. The process gives the glass a hard, smooth surface, thickness uniformity, and clear optical performance.

Which thicknesses are available?

Is float glass the same as tempered glass?

No. Float glass is the flat glass formed and annealed after the tin-bath process. Tempered glass starts with annealed glass, which is cut and cleaned before being heated to about 620 to 680°C and rapidly cooled. This treatment increases impact and bending resistance, and broken tempered glass forms small, blunt pieces. Buyers who need tempered glass should specify the tempering requirement after confirming the finished size and processing details.
