The Difference Between Regular Glass and Tempered Glass
When it comes to glass products, understanding the distinctions between regular glass and tempered glass is crucial for both safety and functionality. Regular glass, also known as annealed glass, is produced by heating silica sand and other materials until they melt, then allowing the glass to cool slowly in a controlled environment. This slow cooling process, known as annealing, gives regular glass its smooth surface and clarity but does not impart additional strength.
In contrast, tempered glass undergoes a unique manufacturing process that enhances its durability and safety. After being formed and cut to size, tempered glass is subjected to extreme heat—around 620 degrees Celsius (1150 degrees Fahrenheit)—and then rapidly cooled. This process, known as tempering, significantly increases the glass's strength, making it about five to seven times stronger than regular glass of the same thickness. This characteristic makes tempered glass an ideal choice for applications where safety is paramount, such as in shower doors, glass doors and tables, and in buildings where large glass panels are needed.
Additionally, tempered glass can withstand greater temperature fluctuations than regular glass, making it suitable for environments prone to high heat or cold. For example, it is commonly used in oven doors, glass facades, and in areas exposed to direct sunlight.
